Inmates Protest ‘Rotten' Food

Five Texas inmates refused to leave their cells in the Cameron County Jail early Wednesday to protest what they described as rotten food and poor treatment.
Officials locked down the downtown jail and suspended visits for the morning. The inmates refused to leave their cells to make way for a maintenance crew to address a plumbing problem and were aggressive toward officers, according to the Cameron County Sheriff's Office.

The protest started during a 5 a.m. breakfast and lasted about five hours. The Sheriff's Office sent a SWAT team wearing riot gear and carrying paint rifles.

The federal inmates were being held by the U.S. Marshal's Office on immigration and other charges. The Marshal's Office would not name the inmates. Lucio said the inmates would face administrative punishment and were moved to the Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito. While being escorted out of the downtown jail, the inmates said they were protesting "rotten food" and being "treated worse than dogs."
