More NZ Prison Cells to be Shared

The New Zealand Corrections Department said last week that more prisoners will have to share a cell with another inmate to cope with increasing numbers. Spokesman Paul Monk says the Prison Service has reached an agreement with prison officer unions to increase the doubling up of cells in 17 jails around the country.
Monk says some cells have always had two inmates in them, but more than 250 other cells are being fitted with an extra bed. He says it is better than using police or court cells, and staff will be careful which prisoners they place together.
But the Howard League for Penal Reform says the change could result in a prisoner being in a violent situation - especially if the other inmate has a mental illness. Spokesman Peter Williams QC says it is totally unsatisfactory because as well as being potentially violent it's unhygienic and archaic.
