Charges Expected In Jail Fire

New charges are expected this week against four Hughes County, Oklahoma inmates believed to have assaulted a jailer and started a fire. Marlin Resinger, 36, Danny Lozer, 31, Sonny Collinsworth, 19, and Michael Horton, 25, are accused of attacking a jailer and using a cigarette lighter to set fire to trash in an empty cell in the underground jail last week, Hughes County Sheriff Houston Yeager said.
The fire was contained in the cell but the lack of windows caused the smoke to fill the jail and forced authorities to evacuate its 33 inmates for two hours as firefighters used fans to clear out the smoke.
Resinger and Collinsworth are being held on charges of first-degree murder. Resinger is awaiting trial in the March 2005 death of a 41-year-old woman and her 17-year-old son in Wolf. Collinsworth has pleaded guilty to the August 2004 shooting of Silas Price Jr., a butcher from Konawa. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in that case. Resinger, Collinsworth and Lozer were moved to Hughes County from Seminole County because its jail was thought to be more secure, officials said.
After the incident, two inmates were treated at a local hospital for smoke inhalation and released. The jailer who was hurt, Jake Haren, was treated for contusions and released.
The Hughes County Jail is equipped to house 36 inmates. But there have been problems in the past two years. In 2005, a man in police custody died by falling down the stairs. He was on his way to take a breathalyzer test. In 2004, inmates stuffed the toilets with towels, causing flooding problems.
Last week, everything that could be set on fire was taken from jail inmates, Yeager said. Items eventually will be returned to the inmates.
