A Saint Petersburg, Fla. man who has spent more than two decades in prison for rape and robbery is expected to be freed this week after DNA evidence exonerated him. Alan Crotzer, 45, was convicted in 1982 to 130 years in prison. Crotzer and two brothers were charged with robbing a Tampa family in 1981. Crotzer and one of the brothers also were convicted of kidnapping and raping a 38-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl at gunpoint. A victim picked Crotzer out of a lineup but one of the brothers said Crotzer was innocent. He said he and his brother were the rapists and a long-time childhood friend was their accomplice. A jury found Crotzer guilty of two counts of sexual assault, armed robbery, burglary, aggravated assault and false imprisonment. The brothers also got long prison sentences. Crotzer could have been released from the Polk Correctional Institution earlier this month, but he asked that it be delayed so arrangements could be made for his shelter and support. |
