An Ohio prisons report says a fight at the Pickaway Correctional Institution that left eight inmates and 2 officers injured started with a swastika drawn on a sleeping inmate's head as a prank. Officials say the fight at the suburban Columbus facility between a white supremacist gang and a loosely organized gang of other inmates was unusual for happening at a minimum- and medium-security prison. According to state data, gang membership in Ohio prisons has more than doubled since 1999. But prisons officials say the increase is caused by better tracking of inmates and is not true growth. The union representing prison officers says the state did well controlling prison gangs in the past but budget cutbacks have lead to fewer officers and more problems. |
