A New York man arrested on weapon possession charges Friday night after, police said, he ran a red light died at Orange County Jail, town police said last week. Town police Sgt. Leif Spencer said the department learned last week that James L. Jackson Jr., 47, of Newburgh, had died during the night. Spencer said he didn't know of any suspicious circumstances surrounding Jackson's death. An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death. Town police Officer Wyatt Tual stopped Jackson after he allegedly ran a red light. Police said Tual found a loaded .22-caliber revolver in the car. Jackson's driver's license was suspended, police said. Jackson was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony - one because the gun was loaded, and one because he had four prior felony convictions. Most recently he pleaded guilty to fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony, in Orange County Court on Jan. 18, and he was awaiting sentencing on that conviction, police said. |
