An Indiana inmate at the Pendleton Correctional Facility inmate died after he was found hanging in a utility closet, state prison officials said. After finding Jerome Barker, 41, staff members tried unsuccessfully to revive him before he was pronounced dead. The Madison County coroner's office and the Indiana State Police are investigating the death. Barker had been at the Pendleton prison since 1994 after being convicted in Marion County of rape and criminal deviate conduct and was expected to remain in prison until at least 2032. The death follows two suicides at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City. Charles Roche Jr., 42, used a sheet braided into a rope to hang himself Jan. 11. Just one day later, Stephen Johnson, 29, choked himself with a sheet while in bed, according to prison officials. The state Department of Correction plans a March 1 summit with the state Division of Mental Health and Addictions and the National Alliance on Mental Health to discuss methods of suicide prevention. |
