NY Set to Break Ground on New Jail

When spring arrives, people who live and work in Geneseo, New York can expect to see a change at the Livingston County Jail. That's when groundbreaking should start on an expansion project.
Plans for the project first began 15 years ago. Livingston County Sheriff John York said the existing jail is too small.  The sheriff said they need more space to accommodate increased arrests.
"Criminals now travel and when they get into this city, we have the habit of catching them. The dstrict attorney has the habit of prosecuting them, and judges put them in jail," York said.
The current jail holds only 53 inmates; while the new jail will be able to hold 200. The expansion is expected to cost $15 million. Plan limits criminal mental commitments to state hospitals.
