Twenty federal inmates at Alabama's Mobile County Metro Jail have threatened to stop accepting food until their complaints about mistreatment are addressed, and officials said some have refused meals. The inmates signed a petition last week listing three grievances: their daily diet, their medical care and the conditions of their toilets and showers. "We are respectfully submitting this petition to whom it may concern in an orderly fashion with expectations of a prompt and reasonable action taken on your part to bring our issues to the forefront so they can be properly addressed and resolved," the handwritten document states. The inmates said they also are willing to lose privileges such as television, telephones and use of day room areas. Officials with the Mobile County Sheriff's Office, which runs the jail on St. Emanuel Street, said they had not received the petition. "Every time we have a grievance, we try to look into whatever the grievance may be," Chief Deputy Mark Barlow said. "This is the first I've heard of any of this." Barlow said he planned to meet with Warden Mike Haley today to get more information about the complaints. Barlow noted that 20 complaints out of a jail population of about 1,400 represent a tiny percentage, but he added that officials take them seriously. |
