TX Inmate Executed for Double Murders
By Associated Press
Published: 02/01/2006

A prayerful Jaime Elizalde Jr. was executed last night for the 1994 slaying of two men outside a Houston cantina. Elizalde, 34, thanked friends for their support and urged fellow Death Row inmates to "keep the faith and stay strong and put your faith in the Lord."

Elizalde began praying as the drugs took effect. He was pronounced dead at 6:17 p.m. At about 5:30 p.m., the U.S. Supreme Court turned down a late appeal. Elizalde's lawyers argued that he could be mentally retarded and therefore ineligible for execution. They also challenged Texas' use of lethal drugs in executions, saying they cause unconstitutional pain and suffering.

Shortly after the announcement of its ruling on Elizalde, the high court stopped a Florida execution where an inmate raised a similar claim about the drug use. Elizalde admitted in a recent interview that he was at the El Lugar bar the night of Nov. 5, 1994, in violation of his parole but insisted that he was not involved in the shootings of Juan Saenz Guajardo, 29, and Marcos Sanchez Vasquez, 33. Elizalde was initially scheduled to die in November but received a reprieve after confessing to another killing that landed someone else in prison.
