A First Coast mother and Florida corrections officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office was killed after police say she drove into the back of a slow-moving tractor trailer on I-95. Police say 42-year-old Belinda Brown was driving an SUV home from an overtime shift earlier this week. The crash happened on the southbound side of the highway near the Baymeadows Road exit. Her coworkers at the Duval County Jail are still trying to understand it all. Any law enforcement job is dangerous -- including dealing with inmates all day long -- but her coworkers never expected her life to end this way. For more than 16 years, Belinda Brown kept watch at the Duval County Jail as a corrections officer -- and her bosses say she was one of the best. "Officer Brown was just the type of loyal employee that -- she cared about her job, she was proud of the uniform and what it stood for, and she cared about helping others," said Director Gordon Bass, the head of JSO's Corrections Department. Her fellow officers remember a hard worker both on the job and after hours. |
