Edward R. McDaniel was serving a 20-year prison sentence in Tennessee for attempted murder when, authorities say, Vickie Lynn Sanford helped break him out of the Lois M. DeBerry Special Needs Facility in Nashville on Oct. 2, 2004.

She's accused of giving McDaniel a correctional officer's uniform. The two were captured six days later in El Paso, Texas. Sanford, 52, will spend the next three years on probation in exchange for making a "best interest" guilty plea to one count of facilitation of escape. Such a plea allows a defendant to avoid a trial without admitting to the state's facts. Under the terms of the agreement, Sanford is forbidden from working again in a correctional facility.

"I believe this is a good resolution for Ms. Sanford," her attorney Nathan Moore said.

Sanford was married and had six children and seven grandchildren at the time of the escape. Moore has said he thinks Sanford was brainwashed by McDaniel and suffered from Stockholm syndrome, like Patty Hurst, who was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army in the 1970s and eventually sided with her captors.

Moore also said he thinks she was "vulnerable because of her marital situation." The former officer and her husband have divorced since the escape. After Sanford's arrest, prison officials confiscated letters she sent to McDaniel saying she still loved him and wished they had made it to Mexico.
