The second suicide by hanging at Michigan's Barry County Jail since September has Sheriff Dar Leaf looking at how officers can prevent future deaths. Corrections deputies found Mark Wayne Salski, 41, unconscious inside his cell about 11:30 a.m. Efforts to revive Salski were unsuccessful, and the Hastings man died at Pennock Hospital, Leaf said. "We're trying to see what we can do, if there is anything that could have stopped this," Leaf said. "We don't know that there is. It's frustrating to have this happen once. We hoped there wouldn't be a second time." In September, jailers discovered David L. Comp, 36, of Clinton Township, dead inside his cell, hanging by a bed sheet. Both men were screened for depression and suicidal thoughts upon entering the facility and neither gave indicators they would harm themselves, Leaf said. The tests only are accurate if the inmates are being truthful, the sheriff said. "There was nothing that was flagged," Leaf said of Salski. The Hastings man, who had a history of minor traffic offenses and misdemeanor convictions, was jailed on two fugitive warrants and a marijuana possession charge. The warrants stemmed from state police arrests alleging Salski committed several break-ins, Leaf said. Salski entered the jail on Jan. 19 three days after he was arrested in Allegan County for driving with a forged license and operating on a suspended license, state police records show. He spent three days in the Allegan County Jail before being picked up on the warrants, Allegan sheriff's officials said. |
