It was a wet and wild afternoon for the Titusville Police Department in Florida last week, after a prisoner managed to break two sprinkler heads in two holding cells, flooding the booking area and leaving the evidence and squad rooms waterlogged. Police charged 22-year-old James Devlin Dykes with criminal mischief and preventing the extinguishment of a fire after the damaged sprinkler set off a fire alarm and sent thousands of gallons of water spilling onto the floor in several rooms for about 30 minutes, officials said. Police estimated the damage to the booking area of the jail at $3,000 but expected that figure could rise. "We're just getting the building dried out back there," said Warren Van Vuren, spokesman for the Titusville Police Department. "The water also got into several offices and into our server room. Thank God all of the computers were elevated off the floor." Dykes was booked into the holding cell earlier in the day after being charged with aggravated assault. Police said he broke into a home, stole car keys and later pulled a knife on a neighbor who confronted him. Booking officers placed Dykes in an adult holding cell when he somehow reached up and broke the sprinkler head, reports show. The officers responded to the cell, handcuffed Dykes' hands behind his back and moved him into a juvenile area while they tried to control the flow of water. |
