Inmates Sickened at Local Jail

A potentially deadly bacteria meant early release for some Michigan inmates at a local jail last week. Three Livingston County Jail inmates have been diagnosed with a contagious staph infection. The flesh-eating bacteria is resistant to antibiotics and can be deadly if it's found too late.
Officials say the outbreak seems to be under control. However, some forty inmates got out of the jail last week. Officials say the MRSA outbreak was only part of the reason. The jail is overcrowded and the contagious infection just moved things along a little faster.
It's seen in places where people live in tight quarters, like the Livingston County Jail. The bacteria entered with an inmate who claimed he had a spider bite, but when the sore wasn't responding to medical treatment, the prisoner was hospitalized, and doctors confirmed that he was infected with MRSA.
Michael Murphy, Livingston County Undersheriff: "Initially, they thought amputation might have to be performed, because this had gone untreated for so long."
Undersheriff Michael Murphy says it's a case where landing in jail probably saved the man's life, but unfortunately, because the inmate wasn't diagnosed when he was admitted into the jail, the bacteria spread to his two cellmates.
Michael Murphy: "Had it been diagnosed at that time, there would have been no spread, he would have been quarantined in an isolated cell and that would have been that."
Murphy says the jail has been thoroughly cleaned with a bleach solution, and there's no cause for alarm.
Michael Murphy: "The staff handled it great, the inmates have handled it great, because I think they've seen the steps we've taken to prevent the spread of this."
All three infected inmates have been treated, and officials say they're doing well. The Livingston County Health Department is tracking down inmates recently released from the jail to make sure they're vigilant about recognizing and seeking medical treatment for MRSA. They're also looking at how the man who brought the disease into the jail became infected.
