The release Tuesday of a Mississippi inmate's cause of death after an alleged jailhouse beating is part of a complicated legal process that could take months to resolve. An autopsy showed the cause of death for Jessie Lee Williams, 40, was a subdural hemorrhage of the head, "a bleeding in the brain," said Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove. According to the National Institutes of Health, a subdural hemorrhage, or hematoma, is usually the result of a serious head injury. Williams was removed from life support Monday night at his family's request. He was hospitalized Saturday night for treatment of head injuries within an hour of being taken to the Harrison County jail on misdemeanor charges. Multiple agencies are investigating his death and a jail employee has been placed on administrative leave pending investigation. Allegations that Williams was beaten after being restrained at the jail raises questions that many, including his family, want answered. The lead agency is the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, which has no timeline for completing criminal investigations, said spokeswoman Delores Lewis. The FBI's involvement in such cases means "an unbiased summary of the event will be forthcoming by an unbiased third party," said spokeswoman Deborah Madden. The FBI considers "color of law" as well as the 14th and 8th Amendments, which address excessive force, due process and cruel and unusual punishment, said Madden. |
