A former officer at a private Louisiana prison in Evangeline Parish has been convicted on federal charges of beating an inmate and then asking other officers to cover up the incident. The jury deliberated about 45 minutes before returning a guilty verdict against 51-year-old Gilbert Self after a three-day trial. Self was a captain at the Pine Prairie Correctional Center, owned by LCS Corrections Services. He faces up to 10 years in prison on criminal civil rights violations and charges of witness tampering. Self was accused of beating a Cuban national who was being detained for immigration violations. Prosecutors said the July 2003 incident began when the detainee allegedly made crude remarks to a female officer. Self remains free on bond pending sentencing by US District Judge Richard Haik. No sentencing date has been set. |
