Corrections officers and officials across the state of Washington will pay their respects to Rev. Robert C. Lynn (Bob) on Feb 14th. Lynn died suddenly and unexpectedly while on vacation in Hawaii with his wife, Lenore, and longtime friends. Lynn's dedication, hard work and years of service in corrections will not be forgotten by those around him. Lynn was born in Colorado and grew up in Colville, WA. He married Lenore Rieckers in 1951, and together they were parents to three children - Roger Lynn of Moscow, ID, Warren Lynn of Indianapolis, IN, and Jennifer Gibbons of Salem, OR. After graduating from high school Lynn attended Northwest Christian College and the University of Oregon in Eugene. He was ordained into Christian ministry in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) during this time. Lynn then continued his education for ministry at Lexington Theological Seminary in Kentucky, while serving as the pastor of Falmouth Christian Church in Falmouth, KY. Following seminary he served churches in Utah and Washington State, and also began a long and distinguished career as a chaplain in the US Air Force Reserve. In 1967 he moved to Salem, OR to accept a new call to ministry as a prison chaplain, first at the Penitentiary and then at the Correctional Institution and also the Women's Penitentiary. In 1983 his ministry in corrections took a new turn when he moved to Olympia, WA to become the Religious Program Manager for the Washington State Department of Corrections, directing the religious programming within all the adult correctional facilities in the state. While in that capacity he was instrumental in implementing a wide variety of programs and policies which ensured that people of all faith traditions were treated fairly and with respect. In the early 1990s Lynn retired from the Air Force Reserve as a full Colonel and from the Washington State Dept. of Corrections in 1999, and began serving as Pastor of Skyline Christian Church in Tacoma, WA, where he was still actively serving at the time of his death. Lynn is survived by his wife, Lenore, their three children, two daughters-in-law, seven grandchildren, his sister, Shirley, several nieces and nephews and countless friends. A memorial service will be held at First Christian Church in Tacoma, WA (602 N Orchard St) on Tues. Feb. 14th at 1 p.m. Memorial gifts can be made to Skyline Christian Church, Matthew House in Monroe WA, or the charity of your choice. |
