When the fire alarms went off at Georgia's Floyd County Jail last week, Christie Parker thought it was a drill. “They do tests sometimes, and we thought it was nothing,” said Parker, a records supervisor. It wasn't a test. The fire sent 14 inmates and seven Floyd County Sheriff's Office personnel including the sheriff to the hospital for smoke inhalation. All but two inmates were released shortly afterward. The flames escaped from an overheated dryer when it was opened around 7:30 a.m., Chief Deputy Tom Caldwell said. While damage from the flames was restricted to the laundry room, smoke made its way through the jail's medical area, staff room, kitchen and booking facility. “Just a malfunction in the dryer,” said Rome-Floyd County Fire Marshal Scott Silvey. “It's just a mechanical problem.” According to FMC, inmates treated and released included Terry Chapman, Ronald Smith, Johnny Arnold, Jason Gossett, James Kirby, Tony Wilson, Daniel Welchel and Roger Billings. Sheriff Tim Burkhalter said inmates Jeffery McWhorter, Robert Pierce, George Dowdy and Michael Weeks were also treated and released from the hospital. Inmates Joseph Dye and Donnie Harris were admitted for treatment and were listed in stable condition last week, an FMC official said. |
