A Georgia inmate has pleaded not guilty to allegations that he tried from within prison to hire a hit man to kill a judge. Ted Lamar Griffin Sr., 59, who has been in prison since 1998, has been charged with violating the state's racketeering law. According to the indictment, while Griffin was housed at the Augusta State Medical Prison, Griffin allegedly used a telephone to arrange for the killings of Superior Court Judge Deborah Benefield of Clayton County and a man Griffin suspected was having an affair with his girlfriend. Griffin is accused of contacting people inside and outside prison about gathering information about the alleged targets, which would have assisted a hired killer, according to the indictment. Chris Nicholson, his attorney, said the case is built on the word of convicted felons. A trial date has not been set in the case. Benefield was the judge who sentenced him in 1998 to simultaneous sentences of 20 years for aggravated assault and 10 years for false imprisonment. |
