Last week, inmates at California's San Quentin State Prison handed over $3,600 to the American Red Cross and about $2,000 to the Marin Humane Society for people and animals displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Red Cross spokesman Bob Ganiard said his organization will put the money in a fund for buying such things as beds and clothes. The inmates raised the money while earning 14 cents an hour at their prison jobs. "It was quite an inspirational day," he said. This is the second time in a year that inmates have raised a significant amount of cash and donated it to a cause. Last July, an inmate was watching the Oprah Winfrey Show when he found out all three libraries in Salinas, hometown of author John Steinbeck, were closing due to a lack of money. That led him to put together a group of other inmates who conducted a food sale to raise money for the benefit of the library. They eventually raised $1,500 and handed over a check to the Salinas mayor during a special commemoration ceremony in a prison classroom. |
