U.S. Navy ships are helping patrol the international waters off Yemen to try to recapture al Qaeda prison escapees if they try to flee by sea, the Pentagon said in a statement on last week. Among the 23 prisoners who escaped through a tunnel last week was Jaber Elbaneh, the mastermind of the bomb attack on the USS Cole in Yemen in 2000, the Pentagon said in a statement from Manama, Bahrain. The Navy ships are part of Combined Task Force 150, which routinely patrols the waters in the area. "Ships from CTF 150 are monitoring international waters along the coast of Yemen in an attempt to either block possible maritime escape routes or capture the suspected terrorists if they make this attempt," the statement said. |
