Fighting erupted among black and Latino inmates Tuesday aboard a California Sheriff's Department bus on its way to Fontana Superior Court. The fight broke out about 8:40 a.m. in the rear area of the bus, loaded with 55 inmates, after it left West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino County sheriff's officials said. On Friday, fights on two buses en route to the courthouses in Rancho Cucamonga and San Bernardino injured 14 inmates. Sheriff's officials said they believed the incidents were related to a week-long series of fights in Los Angeles jails between blacks and Latinos. On Tuesday, when inmates did not respond to verbal commands from sheriff's deputies, the bus immediately returned back to the jail. "Inmates were being taken off or removed from the bus when the fight erupted again," said Robin Haynal, a sheriff's spokeswoman. Deputies deployed a sting ball, which shot out rubber pellets, and brought the fighting to a stop, Haynal said. One inmate was transported to a local emergency room for injuries suffered after being kicked, and two other inmates were treated at the scene for injuries received from the rubber pellets. No deputies were injured and authorities said no weapons were found. |
