Three Macomb County, Mich. Jail officers were injured last week when a prisoner attacked a female officer, WDIV reported. Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel says the attack may have partly been the result of overcrowding at the jail. The officer was reportedly letting three prisoners out of a crowded holding cell to go to court when a fourth man stepped out, too. The woman led the man back into the cell, but when she turned her back to him and entered a doorway, he slipped in behind her and knocked her over with full force, according to police. Two other officers at the jail were injured when they rushed to help, WDIV reported. The 45-year-old attacker had reportedly been placed in the jail for assaulting a Warren police officer. Hackel says the incident was an example of the problems officers face every day, especially with an overcrowded jail. The jail, in Mt. Clemens, is apparently in need of more cells. But Hackel says that until they're built, he may have to resort to releasing some prisoners early, Local 4 reported. On Wednesday, authorities will reportedly begin compiling a list of which prisoners would be considered low risk or the safest to release. Hackel said he would oppose letting go anyone who's been convicted of assault or drunken driving. |
