More than 100 California cats that are making a Joaquin Valley prison their home are facing a death sentence. Administrators at Avenal State Prison say they will have to kill the more than 100 cats that have moved into and reproduced inside the prison. The felines have become a health nuisance for the prison. The state has cited the prison for unsafe working conditions because of cat urine and feces. Officials say they don't know how so many of the animals got into the prison. Last weekend, volunteers removed about 50 cats, taking most to a Central Valley ranch. Volunteers spayed and neutered and the animals, and gave some veterinary care. But prisons officials say there are still about 100 more cats roaming the facility. Prison workers are trying to trap the remaining felines. |
