Muslim prison inmates in Washington State are suing for the right to specialized meals that include meat. The inmates, in three lawsuits making their way through the system, say their religion requires 'halal' meals, which require slaughter of animals in a tightly proscribed manner, the Seattle Times reported.
Inmates in Washington State who choose a Muslim diet are on a lacto-ovo vegetarian meal plan, which includes eggs and milk products, the newspaper said. Thus, if a Muslim inmate wants to follow his religion, he has to become a vegetarian.
