Security Review After Inmate Release

An administrative investigation continues at Virginia's Riverside Regional Jail following the weekend release of the wrong inmate.
"An inmate with the name Travis D. Jones was supposed to be released for his time served on burglary and probation violations, but a different inmate of the same name was released," said Lt. Col. Walter Minton, assistant superintendent at Riverside Regional Jail.
Minton said that Travis Dominik Jones, an inmate transfer from Chesterfield who is charged with several murder and drug-related charges, was released sometime between 9 and 10 a.m. Saturday.
Jail staff discovered that the wrong Jones had been released at around 12:30 or 1 p.m.
"We put the word out to local police and made calls to his family as well," said Minton. State police were also notified to be on the lookout for Jones.
By 4 p.m. the Jones who was mistakenly released was back at Riverside Regional Jail. The inmate's father brought him back to the jail without incident.
"Right now he's being charged with escape," said Minton. "He knew he wasn't supposed to get out so that's why he's being charged with escape."
Minton said it will be up to the court system regarding what will be done with the charge and whether Jones will have to serve any additional time.
"Our policies are sound, someone just didn't follow them," said Minton. "This is really a case of human error. The standard procedures are there."
A press release from the jail states that the last step in the process of releasing an inmate is to verify the identity of the inmate being released with the picture in their file. In this instance, that was not done.
Minton said that an investigation is being conducted and that administrative action may be taken. The name of the employee who mistakenly released Jones has not been released because it is a personnel matter.
