Authorities searching for Indio jail escapee

An inmate in the Riverside County Jail in Indio, Calif. escaped early Tuesday while moving laundry with two other inmate workers, according to authorities.
Jose Adam Jimenez, 27, of Indio was taking laundry from the interior of the jail to the rear of the facility when he ran from the jail, reported Deputy Dennis E. Gutierrez, Riverside County Sheriff's Department public information officer.
The other two inmates were escorted back into the facility and local law enforcement agencies were notified.
Jimenez remained at large Tuesday night.
He does not have a history of violence and was in jail on a 90-day sentence for drug possession.
Jimenez was scheduled to serve only half of that and would have been released well before the Christmas holiday, Gutierrez said.
He had served less than a week of his sentence prior to escaping.
All inmates who participate in the work program are non-violent offenders and are usually serving relatively short sentences, Gutierrez said.
He said the department would never choose someone for the work program who is a danger to staff members or to the public.
When Jimenez is apprehended, he will face additional charges for the escape, which will lengthen the time he will spend in jail.
