Maine State Police are investigating the death of a York County Jail inmate following a fight in a jail housing unit, officials said Wednesday.

Luis Martinez, 32, of Lynn, Mass., was pronounced dead at about 9 p.m. Tuesday after being taken from the jail to Goodall Hospital in Sanford, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The death is being treated as a homicide, McCausland said. The state medical examiner's office conducted an autopsy Wednesday but said further study is needed pending a determination as to cause of death. The fight took place in a common area of one of the jail's housing units and was witnessed by dozens of other prisoners, McCausland said.

McCausland declined to identify the other inmate, who was transferred to the jail's maximum security section. No charges have been filed. Martinez was awaiting trial on drug charges following his arrest last September by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency in Old Orchard Beach. The Maine Department of Corrections, which oversees jail and prison facilities in the state, has been notified of the incident. State police investigators worked throughout the night and returned to the jail Wednesday for additional investigation, McCausland said.
