A grand jury returned first-degree murder indictments yesterday against inmate Brandon Travon Morris, 20, who is accused of killing a correctional officer at a Western Maryland hospital.
Washington County State's Attorney Charles P. Strong Jr. said the grand jury returned a 36-count indictment against Morris, who had been serving a seven-year sentence at Roxbury Correctional Institution for armed robbery and assault.
Morris is charged with killing correctional officer Jeffery A. Wroten, 44. He was shot in the face with his service revolver as Morris escaped from his Washington County Hospital room Jan. 26. He had been brought to the hospital for treatment of what authorities have described as a self-inflicted injury.
Strong said his office will decide within the next few weeks whether to seek the death penalty. The charges against Morris also include the brief kidnapping of a patient's mother who was visiting in a nearby room and the armed carjacking of a taxicab outside the hospital.
Strong and other state officials refused to release details of how the inmate allegedly managed to wrest Wroten's gun away from him. "With a trial anticipated in this matter, it would be inappropriate to go into further detail," Strong said.
