A Bartholomew County Jail inmate whom Indiana authorities planned to question as a witness in a quadruple murder hanged himself with a bed sheet as his cellmate slept nearby, officials said. Jailers found Michael Dean Ward, 37, last week when they went into his cell to take him to the doctor, Sheriff Kenny Whipker said. Coroner Larry Fisher ruled the death a suicide. Whipker said the last county inmate to hang himself was 20 years ago in the former jail in Columbus, 50 miles south of Indianapolis. The death was surprising, he said, because Ward showed no signs of being suicidal. Ward surrendered after a standoff with Jennings County Sheriff's deputies Tuesday. He was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear on three counts of intimidation. Whipker said prosecutors also wanted to question Ward as a witness in the retrial of Robert Bassett. Bassett is accused of killing four Seymour residents -- Jamie Engleking, 20; her two children, Jessica Brown, 2, and Brandon Engleking, 1; and family friend Amanda Davis, 12. A jury convicted Bassett of the four murders in 2001, but the Indiana Supreme Court overturned the verdict and ordered a new trial, which is scheduled for April in Dearborn County. |
