India Officials Accused of Branding Inmate

An inmate of India's Nabha Jail has demanded action against the jail officials responsible for torturing and branding derogatory words on his body. Narinder Singh, lodged in Nabha jail now for more than three years in a murder case, had filed an application in the court of Additional Sessions Judge, Ropar, S.K. Goel during the hearing of the case last week demanding action against the guilty jail officials.
He also showed the branded words to the Judge and the reporters. Narinder Singh alleged that Deputy Jail Superintendent Charan Singh and other jail officials had beaten him up mercilessly and branded some words on his back with some hot object after he objected to the abusive and offending remarks used against him by the Numberdar of his barrack, Zora Singh.
The court also ordered the shifting of Narinder Singh to Patiala Jail and further directed the Patiala Jail Superintendent to get him medically examined.
