For the second time in less than nine months, a former Middletown man has been accused of escaping from a jail in East Central Indiana. Authorities said Joshua S. Deck, 25, was one of three men who used a makeshift rope to escape from the Madison County jail late last week. Deck -- already charged with escaping from the Henry County jail last June -- and his two alleged accomplices were each recaptured shortly after their escape. Authorities said Deck joined Ronald L. Patrick, 29, and Justin Shinabarger, 22, both of Anderson, in breaking through an interior wall in a second-story cellblock, then knocked brick veneer from the jail's exterior wall. The three prisoners, all clad only in underwear, climbed to freedom using bed sheets they had tied together, authorities said. The men then swam across White River. Deck and Patrick were arrested not far from the jail at the home of an acquaintance about nine hours after their escape, authorities said. Shinabarger, apprehended about two hours after that in a relative's storage shed in southern Madison County, allegedly was involved in a carjacking and two abductions while free. He already faced charges stemming from two convenience store robberies. Madison County Sheriff Terry Richwine said he had all three men transferred to state prison facilities after their capture. Last June, Deck and two accomplices were accused of escaping from the Henry County jail in New Castle. Authorities said the three men forced a security door open in that jail's recreation yard, then climbed over a 12-foot wall that was topped with razor wire. Deck and co-defendant Michael Shepard, 18, were arrested at the home of Shepard's mother in Kokomo a few hours after the escape. Shepard and co-defendant Bradley Walker have since pleaded guilty to escape. Deck's trial on the charge is still pending in Henry Superior Court 1. |
