| Inmates Sue Over Medical Care |

More than 40 Indiana inmates have sued the Monroe County sheriff, the jail commander and the jail's new health-care provider, alleging that prisoners receive inadequate medical treatment, recreation time and access to the law library. The lawsuit asks for a temporary restraining order to stop a doctor with Advanced Correctional Health Care from providing medical care to inmates. The company became the jail's medical provider on Jan. 1, taking over the job from Bloomington Hospital. Inmates allege in the lawsuit filed Friday in Monroe Circuit Court that the new company has discontinued all special-diet food trays, including those for inmates who have restrictions because of religious beliefs or medical concerns. In addition, an estimated 85 percent of jail inmates have been taken off their medications "for no good cause other than to save money," the lawsuit said. Inmates are seeking an injunction to allow the court to investigate the company to verify its fitness to remain in control of the jail's medical needs. The base price for Advanced Correctional Health Cares yearlong contract is $466,816, officials said. In 2005, jail medical costs were about $650,000. County officials said they were concerned about the high prices and turned to the new firm to cut costs. County Sheriff Steve Sharp said Monday he had not seen the complaint so he could not comment. Also in the suit, inmates claim they do not have enough time or space for recreation. |
