An autopsy showed a man who died this last week at Mississippi's DeSoto County Jail bled to death - apparently from injuries suffered during an automobile accident. Authorities said Isidro Molina Tapia, 41, of Walls, died after twice refusing medical care following the accident. Deputies said Tapia was on a county road when he lost control, ran off the pavement and overturned. Deputies called paramedics to the scene, but Tapia refused treatment. Deputies then took him to Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven, but he again refused treatment, officials said. Cmdr. David Mitchell of the DeSoto County Sheriff's Department said after Tapia arrived at the jail, he was placed in a one-man holding cell under suspicion of DUI. Mitchell said Tapia remained in full view of the jail's booking desk. "The autopsy showed he died from a laceration of the spleen," county Coroner Jeffery Pounders said. "Mr. Tapia had several fractured ribs, and it's possible that one of the broken ribs caused the laceration of the spleen. "The laceration caused slow internal bleeding that eventually resulted in his death," said Pounders, who ruled the death accidental. Sheriff James Albert Riley requested an investigation of Tapia's death by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. |
