A Madison County, Indianapolis jury convicted a man who claimed he was deaf and couldn't hear trial proceedings in the fatal stabbing of a fellow inmate at a state prison 13 years ago. Jurors spent three hours deliberating last week before deciding that Ralph Barnett, 53, was guilty of voluntary manslaughter. Barnett could face up to 50 more years in prison at sentencing March 20. Before the trial, the Indianapolis man had argued that the county should pay for a $60,000 operation designed to restore his hearing so he could understand the proceedings. But Superior Court Judge Thomas Newman ruled Barnett was faking the disability. Barnett was arrested in August for fatally stabbing convicted burglar Ricky Combs, 28, Austin, in January 1993, while the two were inmates at the Pendleton Correctional Facility. |
