A manhunt continued Tuesday for five inmates who escaped after a fight erupted Monday evening inside the Madera County Jail. Officials consider all five men armed and dangerous. One is charged with murder. Another was jailed on suspicion of attempted murder, mayhem and assault with a firearm. 'If anybody does see them, don't approach them,' Madera County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Erica Stuart said. New county Corrections Department Director William O'Brien spent his first official day in charge of the jail trying to find out what went wrong. Officials said the escape was well-planned and that a fight in a nearby module might have been staged to draw the attention of the one correctional officer overseeing the five who escaped and 53 others nearby. The five climbed a 'daisy-chain' rope made of jail bedding, cut a metal screen over an outdoor basketball court with a smuggled saw blade, moved along the roof to an exterior wall and slid down on another bedding rope. From there, they ran a short distance, scaled a wire fence and apparently sped away along Avenue 14 in a waiting car, Stuart said. It was the second successful escape since Madera County Jail was dedicated and praised as being escape-proof in 1988. |
