Officers at Saskatchewan, Canada Penitentiary are using extreme caution after a violent incident on the weekend. They say they were attacked while taking three inmates out for routine exercise. It took eight officers plus a warning shot to physically subdue the three men. Five officers suffered cuts and bruises. The officers said the prison has been buzzing for weeks with rumors of a planned attack. Kevin Grabowsky, spokesman for the Union of Canadian Correctional Officer, said given those rumors, the prison could have done more to protect its officers. Work place safety is a major issue in contract talks between the union and corrections. Officers have been without a contract for 17-months. Meanwhile, the RCMP are investigating the weekend incident. The three inmates are in segregation. |
