Two inmates tried to kill a third at the federal prison in Otisville, the U.S. attorney said Tuesday. Ramon Renteria of El Paso, Texas, and Juan Alvarez-Ramirez of Guadalajara, Mexico, have been charged with attempted murder, U.S. Attorney James Comey said. Both men are 29 years old. A grand jury in White Plains found the inmates attempted to kill an unidentified fellow resident at the upstate prison on Feb. 21. The one-paragraph indictment gave no clues about motive, the condition of the intended victim, or how the two men had been caught. Marvin Smilon, a spokesman for Comey, said he could provide no further information. Daniel Dunne, a spokesman for the Bureau of Prisons in Washington, also would not elaborate. Prosecutor Jonathan Leiken said the men did not yet have lawyers of record. Renteria is serving a sentence of 12 years and four months for a drug conviction in Texas. Alvarez-Ramirez is serving seven years and five months for illegally re-entering the United States after being deported. |
