A grand jury indicted a 20-year veteran of the Broward Sheriff's Office for manslaughter after a jail inmate fell off the side of a work truck and died. The accident occurred March 12 while Sheriff's Deputy Frank Iovino, 59, was supervising three inmates as they cleared tires from the side of the road on U.S. 27 near Griffin Road. Inmate Charlie Osborne, 62, who was just five days from completing his sentence for cocaine possession and had planned a reunion with his estranged daughter, was standing on the running board of the dump truck when Iovino pulled off the shoulder of the road, sped up and started to pass another Sheriff's Office truck that was traveling in the right lane, according to sheriff's office reports. Osborne appeared to struggle to keep his grip in the face of wind that was whipping around the truck as it approached 50 mph, inmate Greg Newlin told investigators. Osborne lost the struggle, fell off the step, hit the ground and had both his legs run over by the back wheels of the dump truck, Newlin said. He had a good view of the accident because he was sitting on the side of the bed of the other Sheriff's Office vehicle. Joe Buck, another inmate who was riding in the pickup truck bed, corroborated Newlin's version of events. But Iovino, who has since retired, did not. |
