A Silver City, N.M. man who surrendered to police early last Monday morning allegedly attempted to flee from the Grant County Detention Center later that evening by crawling through a ceiling vent, according to a Grant County Sheriff's Department spokesman. Jose A. "Tony" Hernandez, 19, of 804 E. 20th St., Silver City, allegedly tampered with a monitoring camera, removed a ceiling vent and crawled halfway through a vent which leads to the facility's roof, before being discovered by a jail officer, a news release said. The attempted escape was discovered by a jail officer around 8 p.m. The officer grabbed Hernandez by the legs and pulled him back into his cell, officials reported. "Hernandez had turned the camera around, so that [officers] could not see into the area where he was being held," Lt. Joe Sublasky of the Sheriff's Department said. "When the [officers] realized they couldn't see the inmates, they went to investigate." Hernandez was housed in the facility's visiting room, not a holding cell, at the time of the attempted escape. Another inmate was housed in the visiting room with him, according to Sublasky. Authorities do not believe the other inmate was involved in the escape plot. The other inmate's name has not been released. Hernandez was arrested by Silver City police earlier that day and charged in connection with the shooting death of 23-year-old Richard Cuellar. Hernandez was charged with an open count of murder, booked into the Grant County Detention Center and is being held on $500,000 bond. The escape attempt allegedly caused less than $1,000 damage to the facility, according to Sublasky. Sixteen new cameras were installed in the jail last month to provide better surveillance of inmates. Hernandez has been charged with escape from jail and criminal damage to property. |
