Police were searching Saturday for two armed convicts, including one convicted of first-degree murder, who escaped from the Iowa Medical Classification Center in this eastern Iowa city. Omar Wilkens, 19, of Woodbury County, and Jeffrey Hershberger, 38, of Mahaska County, escaped around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, said Fred Scaletta, a spokesman for the Iowa Department of Corrections. Wilkens was serving a life sentence for first-degree murder. Hershberger was considered a habitual property offender and was serving 15 years, Scaletta said. The men were last seen in a 1998 brown Dodge Caravan which they stole at gunpoint, Scaletta said. He said the men are considered armed and dangerous and that they should not be approached. Citizens with information on the escaped convicts are asked to immediately contact police. Oakdale is about 5 miles southeast of Iowa City. |
