Two inmates at the Ridgeland Correctional Institution in Jasper County escaped and were at large Wednesday night, according to prison officials. Shawn Wiles, 24, and John Griffin, Jr., 20, escaped about 7:15 p.m. after they leaned a table from the prison's horticulture area against the fence and climbed over, according to Warden Doug Taylor. Michael Wood, 25, also scaled the fence but was injured in the process and captured by guards, Taylor said. Wiles is a white male with hazel eyes and short black hair. He is about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs about 140 pounds. He is serving a sentence for possession of a stolen motor vehicle, Taylor said. Griffin is a white male with short red hair and a medium build. He is about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs about 160 pounds. He is serving a sentence for second-degree burglary, Taylor said. A white Chevrolet van was stolen from the area shortly after the escape, Taylor said, but officials do not know if the two men were involved. Taylor said he did not have reason to believe either man was armed. Officials are not sure where they may be heading, Taylor said. |
