Stuffing bundles of marijuana into the crotch of his state-issued work pants, a Stateville Correctional Center officer from Hazel Crest, Ill. provided drugs to inmates at the maximum security prison at least five times, according to new federal charges filed Wednesday. Keenan Martin is the fourth Stateville officer to face federal charges stemming from an 18-month investigation into corruption at the Crest Hill institution. The other three - including one officer who supplied a camera and cell phone to inmates, and a female officer who had sex with two convicted murderers - already have pleaded guilty and are scheduled to be sentenced in the coming weeks. According to an FBI affidavit, Martin, 27, admitted to investigators he started smuggling marijuana into the prison because of financial problems. He was given the phone number and name of a drug dealer identified only as "Capone," and later picked up two packages and a $400 payment from the man, the affidavit said. Martin walked into work with the drugs in his pants, and later hid them beneath the liner in a bathroom trash can - where several other packages of marijuana had been stashed, according to the FBI affidavit. Martin claimed the other drugs weren't brought in by him. The inmate who had made the alleged marijuana arrangements with Martin later told the FBI he had in turn passed the drugs onto another inmate. And a third inmate claimed he had taken marijuana and cocaine from Martin's jacket. Martin admitted smuggling suspected marijuana into the prison at least four other times. In those cases, he had been directed by an inmate to purchase the pre-wrapped packages from a woman he'd meet at the corner of 63rd and Paulina streets in Chicago. He was released on $4,500 bond Wednesday and is will be arraigned at a later date. |
