An officer foiled an escape attempt by three murderers yesterday at a Kentucky prison when he saw the men scaling an interior wall. The inmates had used a pair of pliers to cut through an inner fence at the Kentucky State Penitentiary and then used a homemade rope to climb a wall that led to an educational area. William Aucott, 34, Carl Schwalm, 28, and Michael Brunner, 42, were seen by an officer around 9:25 a.m.while climbing the wall, prison officials said. "The officer, while obtaining his weapon, ordered the inmates to stop," a statement from the prison said. "The inmates complied with the order and were immediately apprehended by security staff." The men had taken the pliers from the prison's vocational classroom and substituted a fake pair made of wood. The prison was placed on lockdown after the escape attempt, and prison officials are investigating the incident. The men are facing charges of attempted escape. Aucott is serving a sentence of life without the possibility of parole for at least 25 years for a murder in Mercer County. Brunner is serving the same sentence for a murder in Jefferson County. Schwalm is serving a 55-year sentence for first-degree murder in a Jefferson County case and also is serving a sentence for an attempted escape from the Green River Correctional Complex in Muhlenberg County. |
