Fla. Stabbing Death Spurs Inmate Moves

Forty-four inmates from Brevard Correctional Institution have been moved to different prisons around the state after the stabbing death last week of an inmate, officials said Thursday.
Twenty-year-old Delvan Barnes, serving a four-year sentence on a Miami burglary conviction, died May 7 after he was stabbed in the abdomen with a makeshift knife.
'We moved everybody involved in the incident,' said Debbie Buchanan, a Florida Department of Corrections spokeswoman. 'That is normal operating procedure for us for security reasons.'
Buchanan said the inmates at the minimum/medium security facility were moved to protect them from retaliation and to prevent any sharing of information about the attack. The facility usually houses 924 inmates, officials said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the stabbing while the DOC is handling numerous assault cases related to the incident, officials said.
'There's still a lot of interviews being conducted,' said Agent Jay Schultz, the FDLE investigator in charge of the case, who said the melee was in part gang-related.
The agency is awaiting lab analysis of Barnes' prison clothing and the homemade knife believed to have been used to stab him -- one of several weapons found at the scene.
FDLE will pass its findings on to the Brevard County State Attorney's Office, which will determine what charges to file in the case.
'It is a homicide,' Assistant State Attorney Michael Hunt said Thursday.
Barnes' death is the 13th reported homicide in Brevard County this year, three less than last year's total.
Hunt said the state attorney's office will send someone to the minimum security prison next week to meet with DOC officials and FDLE investigators.
Once at the facility, the investigators will visit the area where the stabbing took place.
