A former death row inmate who was pardoned during former Illinois Gov. George Ryan's last month in office is facing drug, alcohol and traffic charges. Authorities say 39-year-old Rolando Cruz is charged with driving under the influence, illegal transportation of alcohol, possession of less than two-and-a-half- grams of marijuana, driving with a suspended license and speeding. Police said Cruz was arrested about 3 a.m. May 13. He posted bond and is scheduled to appear June 18 in Livingston County Circuit Court. Cruz was twice convicted in the 1983 death of Jeanine Nicarico, who was 10 when she was abducted from her Naperville home, raped and killed. He was acquitted during a third trial in 1995 and DNA evidence later pointed to someone else. |
