County supervisors voted to pay a widow $850,000 after her husband died of a heart attack in county jail because he was not given his daily high blood pressure medication. Jerone Woods, 55, was arrested Sept. 27, 1999. He was seen by a nurse the day after he was taken into custody. The nurse wrote that Woods was younger than 55, which didn't fall under a policy of enhanced medical screening. The nurse did not write that Woods takes medication for high blood pressure. Two days later, a doctor examined Woods and found his blood pressure 'dangerously high' and ordered it be checked regularly. The doctor did not administer the necessary medication. Woods had a heart attack later that day, Sept. 29, 1999, after he completed cleaning and mopping at the Men's Central Jail downtown. |
