The state Department of Corrections has agreed to not move forward with the April closing of a portion of Southern State Correctional Facility. 'Nothing will be happening in April as originally planned,' said Assemblyman Jeff Van Drew in a statement issued Friday evening. The plan has been opposed since the DOC announced that it planned to eliminate a 650-bed section of the prison made up of temporary trailers. Van Drew, D-Cumberland, Atlantic and Cape May, first asked the DOC of its plans for the prison in January, and the DOC denied the rumors until late February when it confirmed the closure. While the DOC maintained that jobs would not be lost due to the closure, Van Drew, along with union leaders, said they doubted that and were concerned corrections officers could be transferred to prisons outside the county. Van Drew had previously charged that the closure was part of an effort to trim the state's budget deficit. DOC officials said the motivation for the closure was the conditions of the trailers. Van Drew said Friday that if the conditions of the trailers are an issue, that will have to be evaluated. He also said canceling the closure of phase 1 won't affect the addition of a 356-bed wing at the prison. Instead, he said, what will happen is the creation of a new process to announce such decisions that will include consulting union, local, county and state leaders. |
