Just deserts for prison inmates should mean no dessert, especially in lean times, a legislator said recently. 'Why are we giving Barabbas-like characters pound cake?' said Rep. Marty Seifert, R-Marshall, referring to a biblical robber. 'We have to make sure the rapists and murderers sacrifice like everyone else.' Seifert's bill to ban desserts in prisons was introduced March 20 -- a day when legislators ate ice cream bars in a traditional spring celebration. Inmates seldom get ice cream or other sweets on the $3.29 a day the state spends to feed them, said Dennis Benson, deputy corrections commissioner. Typical desserts of rice pudding or fruit are part of a balanced diet that prisons provide, he added. Seifert predicted his bill could save taxpayers 'hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions, over time,' but Benson said the savings would be negligible at best. 'We applaud legislators trying to come up with meaningful cost-saving ideas, but we've got to be very careful about cutting into prisoners' diet.' Seifert said Iowa recently cut desserts to trim costs. |
